In April 2009, Sylvia Barnes joined SMH Capital, the investment banking affiliate of Sanders Morris Harris, as Managing Director and group head of energy investment banking. She has over 20 years of financial experience and a background in engineering. Prior to joining SMH Capital, Ms. Barnes served as Managing Director at Merrill Lynch's investment banking energy practice. She joined Merrill Lynch as part of the firm's 2006 acquisition of Petrie Parkman. While at Petrie Parkman and Merrill Lynch, Sylvia successfully executed a variety of merger, acquisition, and divestiture transactions for energy clients, advised on public and private equity offerings and structured and placed private debt and equity.
Sylvia began her career as a reservoir engineer for a subsidiary of Exxon, and was a licensed petroleum engineer. She has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Dean's List) from University of Manitoba, and an MBA from York University. Sylvia is associated with a variety of oil and gas industry professional associations, including being on the board of Houston Producers Forum and an active member of IPAA. In addition she is chairperson of the Santa Maria Hostel Foundation Inc.
