Biography

One of Philamena's hobbies and great passions is golf, which led to her involvement with many of the local and national golf tournaments that support children's charities.  Her accomplishments include chairing the NFL Charity Golf Tournaments benefiting the March of Dimes and coordinating the Oldsmobile Scramble Regional and National Competitions.  For 14 years, she coordinated for the Darrell Royal and Willie Nelson Celebrity Golf Tournament benefiting Boys and Girls Clubs of Galveston.  In addition, she served on the board of governors and was the first woman vice president of the Houston Golf Association (HGA), in which she was involved and volunteered for more than 25 years.  For nine years, she chaired the Shell Houston Open Eagle Awards Charity Gala for the HGA, which donated $15 million to children's charities in Harris, Montgomery and Fort Bend Counties.  She also served as General Chair of the 2003 PGA Tournament of Champions held at Champions Golf Club, and created the tournament's memorial to golfer Payne Stewart.  She also served on the Super Bowl Host Committee, worked on the Final Four, and the Senior Games in 2011.  More recently she has chaired the Children at Risk Golf Tournament, Texas Bowl Texas Legends Golf Tournament, Pink in the Park Golf Tournament, and Astros' Wives Cancer Research Golf Tournament.

She is the founding president of the Harris County Education Foundation, was a member of the Houston Business Promise to Education, and served as chairman of the board of the Jung Education Institute and as co-chair with Barbara Bush of the Houston Chronicle's Book and Author Evening Benefiting Literacy.  She was vice president of development for Community Partners, for which she chaired the Father of the Year Luncheon for three years, and worked with Avance, where the Baird Family received the Spirit of the Family Award and with the Houston Grocers and Manufacturers Association Scholarship Program for High School Students.

Philamena has been active with the Houston Symphony, chairing the Scores Dinners and the Viola Gala welcoming Musical Director Hans Graf to Houston.  She chaired the Child Advocates Luncheon Gala Angels of Hope and the Mayor's Gala for the International Festival, together with serving as President of Moore's School of Music Society, the Houston Opera Guild, Houston Achievement Place Advisory Board, KUHF Leadership Council and Advisory Board.  She is a member of the Houston Heart Association Guild, and was Gala Dinner chair for the Heart Ball.  She is actively involved in the Houston Ballet Foundation, serving on the board and co-chairing the Nutcracker Market Preview Party and the Nutcracker Market Fashion Show and Luncheon and Ballet Bargains.  She was dinner chair for the Ballet Ball and was president of the Ballet Guild in 2006 and 2007.  In 2010 and 2011, she chaired The Women of Distinction Winter Ball, Houston Women's Hall of Fame, The Hunting Art Prize, Answering the Call Houston Fire Fighters Gala, Tapestry Gala and the Consular Corp Gala.

Philamena currently serves on the following boards:  Children At Risk, Memorial Hospital Foundation, The Women's Fund, Houston Fire Fighters Foundation, Interfaith Ministry, Taping for the Blind, Houston Arts Alliance, Houston Ballet, Moore's School of Music, Heart Association, Bass Foundation, Theater Under the Stars, Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, and is  Chair of the Texas Bowl Board of Directors.

Memorial Hermann Hospital System is one of Philamena's favorite charities.  She served on the Foundation Board and twice chaired the annual Memorial Hermann Foundation Circle of Life Galas, Over the Rainbow and Southern Nights.  Philamena was recognized for leading one of Houston's Best Charity Events of the Year in 2005 -- the Memorial Hermann Gala Circle of Life, which she chaired and attended while recovering from the open heart surgery she underwent just four weeks before.  She was instrumental in initiating the School-Based Clinics programs, which Memorial Hermann now actively supports by providing health care services to thousands of children.
