HOUSTON, TX – The Harris County – Houston Sports Authority (HCHSA) and Sports Authority Foundation are thrilled to announce that Houston Oilers legend Kenny Houston has been selected as one of three members in the 2025 Class of the Houston Sports Hall of Fame.
Since being drafted by the Oilers back in 1967, Houston has been a mainstay on the Houston sports scene for years. His Hall of Fame career was defined by his hard-hitting and ball-hawking style of play at the safety position, which helped redefine the role of a defensive back in the NFL.
“This is a complete surprise,” said Kenny Houston upon learning of his induction into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame. “Houston is one of the cities that has so many athletes that are worthy and it will take a lifetime to get them all in, but I’m happy during my lifetime they got me in.”
A Texas native, Houston excelled in athletics from an early age, playing both basketball and football at Dunbar High School in Lufkin. After graduating, Houston attended Prairie View A&M University, where he played football and quickly became the starting linebacker for the team.
His exceptional skills and dedication to the game propelled him to the professional level. He was drafted by the Oilers and had a remarkable career, earning 12 Pro Bowl appearances and setting the record for most defensive touchdowns in a single season (5), a mark that still stands today. In all, Houston intercepted 49 passes, recovered 21 fumbles and scored 12 touchdowns, 9 of which came off interceptions.
Houston’s impact on the field was undeniable, earning him numerous accolades and a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 1986.
“Kenny Houston is one of the best football players to ever play the game so his inclusion into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame is long overdue,” said Daniel Gotera, Sr. Director of Communications for the HCHSA. “Houston is beloved not only by the men who played with him but also by football fans who appreciated his tenacity on the field. We are honored to have him join this very exclusive club.”
In addition to his remarkable achievements on the football field, Houston has been actively involved in the Houston community. Following his football career, he coached at Wheatley High School and Westbury High School. He has also spent years working as a counselor, guiding young people through tough situations and helping inspire future generations.
Houston will be honored at a ceremony in January of 2025, alongside two other distinguished members of the Class of 2025.
