HOUSTON, TX – Yesterday, the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority, in collaboration with the FIFA World Cup 26™ Houston Host Committee, hosted a full day of celebration to mark the one-year-out milestone to the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
The festivities began with a Breakfast with a Champion, featuring a special conversation with Carlos “Captain America” Bocanegra, six-year captain of the U.S. Men’s National Team and member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Bocanegra reflected on his international playing experience and shared insights on the transformative impact the 2026 tournament could have on the future of soccer in the U.S.
Later in the morning, Houston took a bold step forward with the official unveiling of the FIFA World Cup 26 Houston™ Countdown Clock at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). Located in Terminal D-West, Houston’s new state-of-the-art international concourse, the Countdown Clock now welcomes travelers with a powerful reminder: the World Cup is coming, and the excitement is building.
The celebration continued into the evening at POST Houston, where local leaders, community members, and fans gathered to honor the milestone. Highlights included remarks from city and county leadership, a performance by Grammy-nominated artist Ashley Tamara Davis, and a surprise appearance by legendary quarterback Warren Moon. The event spotlighted the city’s commitment to collaboration, community engagement, and delivering an unforgettable fan experience in 2026.
The FIFA World Cup 2026™ officially kicks off on June 11, 2026. The city will proudly host seven matches at NRG Stadium, beginning with its first game on June 14, 2026. With the countdown officially on, Houston is ready to welcome the world.
