2016 Sports Commission of the Year

2016 Sports Commission of the Year

SACRAMENTO– Harris County – Houston Sports Authority was named the recipient of the 2016 Sports Commission of the Year Award for cities with population of 400,000 and above at this year’s National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Sports Event Symposium being held this week in Sacramento. The Sports Commission of the Year award goes to an NASC member which has had the most outstanding impact on their local community through sports events. Judges noted: “The year ended with the Harris County—Houston Sports Authority ramping up to host Super Bowl LI. In between, Houston was Gateway to Gold, processing more than 700 Olympic athletes, 400 Paralympic athletes and Team USA on the Road to Rio, among hosting numerous other events. The year 2016 in Houston was one for the record books.” We are honored and humbled to be recipients of this national award," said HCHSA CEO Janis Burke. "The credit truly goes to our entire team, Board of Directors, dedicated volunteers, and community partners. Without a shared vision of very passionate and dedicated people, our destination could not be successful at hosting sporting events." The greater Houston area will continue to see unique sporting events throughout 2017 as Gold Cup returns in July and the World Corporate Games make their first appearance in Houston in this November. The 25th annual NASC Sports Event Symposium is being held March 27-30 at the Sacramento Convention Center. The NASC Sports Event Symposium is the annual meeting for the only non-profit 501(c)3 trade association for the sport tourism industry. For 25 years, the Symposium has been designed for serious-minded sport tourism professionals by sport tourism professionals.
