Texas Medical Center Partners to Present 2021 World Transplant Games 5K AnyWay

HOUSTON, Texas –Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world and an international leader in collaborative medical advancements including transplantation, cancer treatment and heart surgeries, has partnered with the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority to become the presenting sponsor of the 2021 World Transplant Games 5K AnyWay.

Houston was set to host the 2021 World Transplant Games, but when the global pandemic forced cancellation of the event, the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority created the 5K AnyWay – a virtual race around the world which participants can complete their 3.1 miles Any Way they want. From May 28- June 4 participants can run, swim, row, walk or get creative – think kicking soccer goals or walking a round of golf – as the race bounces through every time zone and every continent and circles the globe.

They’ll cap off the week June 5 with a virtual Around the World AnyWay Celebration that will literally, be “OUT OF THIS WORLD.”

The event is designed to unite transplant recipients, donors and donor families, health care workers and supporters from around the world, raise awareness for transplantation and benefit the World Transplant Games Federation’s Fit For Life! youth initiative.

“We are excited to be able to partner with the Texas Medical Center on this event,’’ said Harris County – Houston Sports Authority CEO Janis Burke. “Not only are TMC’s institutions leaders in transplantation, but they are also on the cutting edge in every specialty.

“To have a partner like this that supports the transplant community as well as our vision for the event with its own 5K AnyWay team is amazing.”

TMC president and CEO Bill McKeon agreed that the partnership is a perfect fit.

“Patients from around the globe come to Texas Medical Center each year to receive specialty medical care,” said TMC President and CEO Bill McKeon. “Our member hospitals and organizations are leaders in the field of transplantation, and through their collaborative efforts, they are advancing innovations in transplant medicine that continue to improve the lives of patients. We are proud to partner with Harris County – Houston Sports Authority to support this important cause.”

Texas Medical Center – the largest medical city in the world – sees more than 10 million patients annually. Its 106,000-plus employees work collaboratively across its 60-plus member institutions to further clinical research and innovation to address the complex health care issues of today. In the last few months, Methodist Hospital transplant teams performed two surgeries that drew international attention — a five-way kidney swap and double-lung transplant in a COVID-19 patient.
