HOUSTON, TX – The Sports Authority Foundation is thrilled to announce that former Houston Oilers quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Moon has been selected as the final member of the Houston Sports Hall of Fame class of 2024.
Moon’s talent, determination, and resilience make him the perfect addition to this year’s highly accomplished and impactful group of athletes.
“The caliber of athletes that have come out of this city…I don’t think there are too many cities that can compare,” Moon said after learning of the news last week. “For me to be involved and for me to be a part of this team, it’s just an outstanding honor for me.”
From 1984 to 1993, Moon established himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks of his era, and he did so, by wearing an Oilers jersey. In 1990, Moon won the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award after passing for over 4,000 yards and 33 touchdowns. The 9-time Pro Bowler left the Oilers as the franchise leader in passing touchdowns, yards, attempts, and completions. All those records still stand today.
After his years in Houston, Moon went on to play with the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, and Kansas City Chiefs. In 2006, Moon was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“Warren Moon’s induction into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame is long overdue,” Harris County – Houston Sports Authority Senior Director of Communications Daniel Gotera said. “As the leader of the Run & Shoot Oilers, Moon solidified himself as a sports icon in Houston and will forever be remembered as one of the best to play the game in this city.”
After a successful college career at the University of Washington, Moon signed with Edmonton in the Canadian Football League (CFL), where he helped lead the Eskimos to a record five consecutive Grey Cup victories, winning the Grey Cup MVP award in the 1980 and 1982 championships. During this time, Moon also became the first professional quarterback to pass for 5,000 yards in a season by reaching exactly 5,000 yards in 1982.
In addition to the honors mentioned, Moon has won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Award and NFL Man of the Year Award. He is also in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and had his Oilers #1 jersey retired by the Tennessee Titans in 2006.
Off the field, Moon’s impact extended far beyond the game. He has been actively involved in multiple charitable endeavors, using his platform to make a positive difference in the communities he supports. The work he has done has helped provide scholarships, educational opportunities, and support to individuals all over the world.
Moon joins Houston Comets legend Cynthia Cooper and Astros legend Lance Berkman in the star-studded 2024 Houston Sports Hall of Fame Class. All three members will officially be inducted at the 2024 Houston Sports Awards in January.
